Racing for Alexander
My son Alexander was born with a heart condition called Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). TGA is a birth defect of the heart in which the two main arteries, the aorta and pulmonary artery, are in reversed positions. A heart with TGA oxygen-rich blood moves through the left side of the heart and back into the lungs without getting to the rest of the body. Oxygen-poor blood moves through the right side of the heart and back to the body without passing through the lungs. It is only corrected with open heart surgery.
Alex had open heart surgery at three days old. The doctors and staff at Children's were outstanding. They made us feel at ease with our son's condition and were there for us when we needed the most guidance. They talked us through Alex's heart condition and what surgery would be like. We were very lucky to have such a strong little baby. He had a smooth surgery and very quick recovery. Today Alex is a year old and is thriving. We are very thankful for everything Children's did for our son and would like to pay back for all their hard work.
