Our son Weston, who passed away at just 7 weeks young due to a congenital heart defect is why we walk in the Heartbeat 5000. On May 17th 2011, we welcomed our 1st son into the world. Within hours we learned that he had a major heart defect and needed to be transported to the U of MN Children’s Hospital. During the first few hours of his life he coded in the heart catheter lab, we thought we had lost him at that point. He fought back and over 7 weeks he went through 2 open heart surgeries to try and fix his transposition of the great arteries, multiple holes in his heart and aortic stenosis. Sadly our sweet son lost his battle against congenital heart disease. No family should have to deal with what we went though. My family now works to raise awareness for congenital heart disease, and pre-natal diagnosis. Did you know 1 in 100 babies are born with congenital heart disease? That is why we are passionate about raising awareness!
