I decided to participate in this hike-a-thon for a few reasons very close to my heart. First, I am a huge advocate for the natural world. I strive to find any opportunity to support conservation and sustainable practices that protect our planet. Second, our relationship with nature must be one of reciprocity and kinship. The concept of biocentrism explains it best, we as humans are not separate from nature, we are a part of nature. There is no “us” without nature and nature deserves our stewardship in return! Lastly, as a clinical mental health counselor, one of my areas of specialty is in Nature Based Therapy. This practice utilizes the instinctively supportive relationship we have with nature and expands on it to provide therapeutic support to alleviate mental health symptoms as well as supporting overall physical and emotional wellness. I have felt the incredible healing powers of nature both personally and professionally. In order for me to continue this work and further expand our connection to nature in this way, I feel that it is a part of my duty to protect and nurture our environment. Hiking is a passion of mine, as it allows me to fully immerse myself in the natural world and find the home I will always belong to. So this fund raiser is truly the perfect fit for me! I hope that you all will join me on my mission.
