In my seventh and final year on the board of the Hitchcock Center for Environmental Education, I am making a big push this Giving Tuesday to leave the place a wee bit richer to ensure its continuing impact. Through cool hands-on projects, kids in our after-school programs, home-school days, and summer camps learn core principles of sustainability. We recently started tiered pricing to reach more kids whose families cannot cover the costs of programs.
Design is a special focus; I was astonished that the tiny humans in one class could cobble together popsicle sticks and Q-tips to make models of buildings that would maximize rain capture and thermal retention. The Hitchcock Center building itself is a 3-D teaching tool; it became the 29th fully LEED-certified building in the world in 2020.
A little Fynn and a little Sarah once attended summer camp here. The board itself has enriched my life with friendship and purpose.
