Why your help is needed

We need your help to properly furnish each of the six units in our newly renovated Transitional Housing building, transforming them into safe, welcoming homes for families who are on the path to recovery.

A brave mom had been trapped in a cycle of abuse and financial control, leaving her full-time job when her son was born and becoming a stay-at-home mom with no means of her own. Her husband’s grip on their lives was suffocating, and breaking free was a leap into the unknown. But at Laurel House, she found hope.

With the help of our Children’s Advocate, her son was placed in a loving, full-time daycare, allowing her the opportunity to start applying for jobs. After numerous interviews, she secured a full-time position, a first step toward independence.

But the road ahead is still fraught with challenges. Years of financial abuse have left her with a low credit score, making it impossible to afford the down payment on a home. Her shelter advocate has recommended our Transitional Housing program as a vital next step—a chance to rebuild her credit, secure stable housing, and truly begin to heal.

This mom and her son will be the first residents of our newly renovated Transitional Housing Building.

What is Transitional Housing?

Laurel House owns a historic building in North Wales, PA. Once part a large estate, this building was gifted to Laurel House over 20 years ago by another organization that had transformed it into individual apartments for survivors of domestic violence and their children. Clients can stay in these apartments for up to two years. They do not sign a lease so there are no broken lease costs or evictions on their record if they leave prior to the end of the 2-year program.

During a client's stay with us, a full-time Housing Case Manager works with them to address the individual barriers they are facing. This may include employment assistance, gaining access to benefits, budgeting, finding childcare, and locating permanent housing. Clients are also assisted with referrals to other community resources in order to provide a wholistic approach to supporting survivors. This program is designed to reduce or eliminate domestic violence survivors' experiences with homelessness and assist them in finding and obtaining permanent housing to enhance their safety and independence.

When you #HelpMakeThisHouseAHome, your donation supports those in our community impacted by domestic abuse.
