Tracing the Line: How Childhood Art Critique and Adult Memory Are Catalysts for Collective Healing & Repair” is my dissertation and community effort exploring how childhood art critique shapes confidence, identity, and emotional memory. Many adults still remember the moment someone dismissed their drawing, mocked their creativity, or silenced their imagination.

As I complete Tracing the Line: How Childhood Art Critique and Adult Memory Are Catalysts for Collective Healing & Repair, I am continuing the work that began in community. For years, adults have sat in my workshops and circles and said: “The first time I was ever shamed and criticized was through my artwork.”

These memories recalled decades later, reveal something heartbreaking: Childhood art critique does not stay in childhood. It becomes a lifelong story about worth, expression, and survival. My dissertation examines how children’s creative expression is often dismissed, mocked, or controlled and how these early ruptures shape adult self-esteem, emotional safety, and the capacity to speak or create freely. My dissertation also explores a difficult truth. In some families, individuals who cause harm including in domestic violence and child sexual abuse intentionally criticize or shame children’s artwork as a tool of control and silence. This work seeks to illuminate those patterns, interrupt them, and offer pathways toward community repair.

Why give? Because adults deserve a chance to reclaim the creativity that was taken from them. Because healing the past makes the future possible. Your support helps us transform early wounds into shared pathways of repair. Your contribution this Giving Tuesday helps: create healing circles where adults can reclaim their creativity from early criticism of their art; build survivor-informed frameworks for repair and honor the stories that people have carried for decades. Thank you in advance for helping us to trace a new line rooted in creativity, dignity, and collective healing. Thank you for being part of expanding this healing work. Your support allows more children and the adults they become to reclaim their creative voices and rewrite the narratives shaped by early harm. You are joining efforts of something incredible by helping someone to trace the line back to their own freedom of creativity and expression.
