ILWU Canada's Community Solidarity Project

ILWU in Community

The ILWU is guided by a cardinal set of principles adopted in 1953. Principal #4 reads in part “IV “To help any worker in distress” must be a daily guide in the life of every trade union and its individual members.

The ILWU has a long history of working in the community. That work starts with the understanding that everyone in the community is a “worker” and “distress” is not just referring to workplace issues. Distress is food scarcity, housing issues, isolation, lack of access to basic human needs.

The ILWU Canada Young Workers are continuing these traditions by partnering with the United Way of the Lower Mainland in an effort to combat some of these distresses that workers in the community face. Not through “charity” but through Community Solidarity!

Please donate today, and join our growing pool of volunteers to become more involved in issues facing our community.

What's going on?

Because of the economic fall-out of COVID-19, people are going hungry. Millions of Canadians, and hundreds of thousands of British Columbians have lost their jobs, and the high cost of living in our region make it difficult for people receiving government support to get by. More and more people are relying on charities to get food on their table.

In the spirit of Community Solidarity, ILWU Canada is stepping up by working with United Way and helping out our fellow workers in distress.

In response to the food crisis started by COVID-19, United Way has launched 130 Local Love Food Hubs around the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, and Sea to Sky corridor. These foods hubs are getting food and other essential supplies into our most vulnerable neighbourhoods. They are also connecting people to life-saving programs that are accessible in their communities and provide a wide range of supports.

ILWU Canada is adopting two regions - Vancouver's Downtown East Side and Surrey - to help out. Funds raised will go to supporting Local Love Foods Hubs, and we'll be building up teams of volunteers to support the Food Hubs.

Join a team, or start one with your comrades. Donate yourself, and share it widely on your social media so that others can join in. If we raise $25,000 we'll be helping get 5000 meals into our community.
