On Saturday, Feb. 5, a cyclone tore through Madagascar, devastating families and communities everywhere. Entire villages have been destroyed due to the resulting landfall and flooding, leaving more than 48,000 displaced people struggling and fighting for survival. It is projected that as many as 150,000 people may be forced to leave their homes as a result of the extensive damage caused by the storm. This is the second cyclone that has devastated the country in the last two weeks. The first, Cyclone Ana, left at least 58 people dead, displacing another 130,000. But Cyclone Ana’s damage reached other countries as well.
In Zambia, Cyclone Ana led to heavy rains, flooding, displacement, and several deaths. Zambia is already experiencing increasing negative impacts of climate change with increased rainfall and strong winds throughout the country, increasing the damage caused by Cyclone Ana. With nearly 179,600 people affected, their shelter structures have been significantly damaged or washed away, household items have been damaged or lost, and flooding has contaminated water sources.
IRUSA is working to help survivors by partnering with organizations on the ground to conduct damage assessments and provide the aid needed most right now.
Drought Devastates Parts of East Africa
Families across Kenya and South Sudan have been hit hard by a drought that is leading to hunger, thirst, disease, and worse: The strain on resources has meant that livestock are dying, affecting livelihoods. There have been reports of domestic and inter-communal violence as well.
In Kenya alone, an estimated 1.4 million people face acute food insecurity and need humanitarian assistance.
Islamic Relief staff are on the ground, providing emergency relief to families in need, but we need your support to reach more people and to provide more aid. Your donation today can help support efforts to bring clean water and urgent food for families, and veterinary aid for affected livestock to help farmers get back their livelihoods.
We will update this page with more details are they are made available. Please give generously.
