Typhoon Rai, a category 5 super typhoon, has devastated the Philippines. With approximately 15.9 million people living in affected areas, they are suffering as a result of flooding, wind damage, and food insecurity. Survivors have been forced to flee their homes and are suffering without aid– it is up to us to provide the food, water, hygiene kits, and emergency shelter that is desperately needed.
These survivors’ homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. Please, don’t leave them to face this alone.
Here’s a quick look at some humanitarian fast facts:
- Agriculture is a main source of income, including farming and fishing (Borgen Project
- One-quarter of the Philippines’ population lives below the poverty line
- While there has been a reduction in poverty across the country, improvements have been slow and uneven
- On September 12, 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) made landfall. It left trails of devastation in four northern regions. It’s the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2018
With all this considered, one thing remains clear: The people of the Philippines are resilient and, with the support of donors like you, families in need there can access opportunities to break the chains of poverty and move toward success.
