The ongoing devastation caused by flooding from heavy seasonal rains have claimed the lives of over 99 people. In addition to the deaths, the floods have affected more than 600,000 people. Another 33,000 people have been displaced to outlying areas.
A New Country with Old Conflicts
South Sudan became a country in July 2011. Even before gaining independence from Sudan, residents struggled with rampant poverty and inadequate civil services.
- Nearly 2.2 million people displaced internally, along with 2.4 million refugees (UNHCR, 2018)
- 85% of South Sudanese refugees are women and children. (UNHCR, 2018)
- 6.1 million suffering from severe food insecurity (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2019)
With all this considered, one thing remains clear: The people of South Sudan are resilient and, with the support of donors like you, families in need there can access opportunities to break the chains of poverty and move toward success.
