Two-thirds of people in India live in poverty, with nearly 70% of people living on less than $2/day. Most live in very rural areas and rely on odd jobs to make ends meet. The lack of employment opportunities in these areas are driving waves of people to the cities, where they lack access to clean drinking water and poor hygiene and sanitation is leading to rising cases of disease such as cholera, typhus, and dysentery.

Women and children suffer the most. India has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world. And according to UNICEF, about 25% of children in India lack access to education. They are instead forced into work or marriage at a young age to help support their families.
