Islamic Relief USA has been providing relief efforts across Latin America for years, starting with efforts in Haiti in the aftermath of paralyzing earthquake that left the island-nation in shambles. Over the years, emergency aid work has carried over into countries like Colombia and Ecuador. The IRUSA community continues to provide aid as often and as efficiently as it can across the region, most hurriedly after emergencies strike.
Colombia
On March 31, 2017, three rivers overflowed in Mocoa, Colombia, sending a destructive torrent of mud and debris through the city of 40,000. Islamic Relief worked with local rescue teams to help survivors and raise funds to send life saving aid.
Ecuador
On April 16, 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Ecuador, crippling much of the country. Islamic Relief worked with Catholic Relief Services to provide an integrated emergency relief project to help those affected.
Haiti
January 2010 a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti. IRUSA teams went to the field to work with and aid survivors, and looked into solutions to address chronic development challenges on the ground.
Mexico
A massive earthquake, measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale, struck Mexico’s capital on September 19, 2017. Islamic Relief sent support to those affected.
Peru
In Peru, IRUSA implemented a project that benefitted nearly 8,000 refugees in 2019. This project improved the quality of the shelters hosting these refugees by providing them with beds, cleaning materials, and furniture. It also improved community kitchens by providing the kitchens with furniture, equipment, utensils, and cleaning materials.
Puerto Rico
On September 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico as a category 4 storm, with upwards of 155 mph winds. Some 3.3 million people lost electricity. In the aftermath, IRUSA worked with partners on the ground in Puerto Rico to distribute aid in the form of water, food, and monetary funds. In late June 2018, IRUSA returned to Puerto Rico with Lions Club International to provide disaster relief and lend support to survivors. Donations from generous donors allowed IRUSA to continue providing relief through partners on the ground.
Venezuela
A portion of the meals packaged during the 2018 500K Meal Pack Out went to Venezuelan refugees entering Cúcuta, Columbia. IRUSA carried out this project in partnership with the Rotary e-Club of Houston and the Cúcuta Rotary Club. The meals were distributed through food banks and reached approximately 5,000 people a day.
