From high school until midway through college, I had a great job working as a day camp counselor for the YMCA. It was the most fun I've ever had at work, and I loved coming up with ways to teach the kids new ideas without them having any idea that there was a lesson behind what we were doing. Children have an amazing ability to pick up on the idea behind what you're saying, and using that lesson in their life.
Now, I work for U.S. Bank, and I LOVE my job. While I've traded in my camp t-shirts for slacks, I still spend a lot of my day teaching. But now, I work with hardworking adults who want to make smart decisions about their finances. I am constantly asked things like, "How do I come up with a savings plan", "What do I need to do to get a loan", and "What the heck does my credit score even mean?!"
Junior Achievement is a great mix between these two great times in my life. By teaching kids about finances, like creating a budget and saving money, we are fostering the idea that any one can be smart with their money. Even kids who have no idea they are learning a lesson.
