Why JA Matters To Me
If you want to know just how smart kids are these days, volunteer to teach a Junior Achievement lesson. Be prepared to be blown away. I've had the privilege of teaching 4th Graders at Whittier Elementary in Salt Lake City. It is a life changing experience as you realize in a short period of time you are showing kids a path in life they didn't know was open to them.
On my first lesson I asked what everyone wanted to be when they grow up. The answers I received surprised me. "I want to work at 7-11, a cashier at Walmart, etc." While those are important jobs, I didn't hear enough kids shooting for the stars. After completing the JA curriculum I had a room full of future entrepreneurs and even a little girl that wanted to do what "Mr. Sean" does for a living. Melting my heart people!
Just to offer some empirical evidence of the impact of Junior Achievement, wrap your mind around these stats:
- 51% of JA Alumni enter into the same job or career as their JA volunteer
- JA Alumni have a median household income that is 20% higher than the U.S. median household income
- Not only are JA Alumni more inclined to finish high school than the general population, they are also 30% more likely to have a four-year degree and 67% more likely to have an advanced degree.
