Our Why: Reed McLaughlin is an amazing father to Nicole and Erin. A true girl dad. He is a loving and devoted husband to Veronica. He is a hard working and thoughtful boss and colleague. The best son, brother, cousin, teacher, coach, and friend. Reed is the quintessential extrovert and knows no stranger. While all of these qualities are wonderful, the trait that, I think, uniquely separates him from the pack is that Reed is the most rabid and loyal fan. I’m not just talking about his beloved Boston teams or the Gamecocks women’s basketball team. I mean that he is the fiercest supporter of everyone he loves, and if those people have kids competing or performing, Reed is going to try his best to show up or tune in, and cheer his heart out. And any time he is asked to buy a coupon book, cookies, popcorn, or donate to any cause or fundraiser, his generosity knows no bounds. Now, as our beloved Reed battles stage 4 kidney cancer, it’s our turn to support him. While Reed has been fighting like a warrior and remaining hopeful, the harsh reality is that there is no cure for his cancer. The gold-standard “miracle” treatment of immunotherapy, that has prolonged the lives of so many with this disease, did not work for Reed. He is currently on his third line of treatment, and when it eventually stops working, there are only a small handful left for him to try. When Reed coached, he would always tell his players, “Work hard. Work smart. And work together!” This was not just his philosophy on the basketball court, it is his philosophy in life. Let’s team up and give everything we’ve got for Reed - because he deserves it - and because we need him here for a long time.
