As we celebrate our 45th Anniversary of the founding of the Lupus Foundation of Northern California, we also remember our founder, Jo Dewhirst. Jo died in November of 2022 and was a constant supporter of the LFNC.
Jo started the Lupus Foundation of Northern California in 1978 when she saw the need for local support and resources for lupus patients. She was LFNC’s first chairperson from 1978-82. In 1982, the Board selected her as LFNC’s first Executive Director and she served in this role from 1982-2009.
During her tenure, Jo worked tirelessly to make sure lupus patients knew they were not alone on their lupus journey. Under her leadership, LFNC:
Started several support groups to bring lupus patients together.
Hosted countless lupus conferences to give lupus patients, families and doctors the opportunity to collaborate, educate one another and build up the community.
Advocated for increased awareness and understanding of lupus.
Promoted inclusiveness in the lupus community by creating English and Spanish programs to meet the social and educational needs of patients and their families.
After her retirement, Jo continued to support LFNC and fundraise at the Outrun Lupus 5K. She was an amazing and energetic person and will be dearly missed. Her legacy will continue to guide LFNC’s team.
