No one wants to talk about this
Domestic violence of all types is still a topic everyone wants to sweep under the rug. People who survive do not want to tell their stories because there is still such a stigma associated with being a "victim" in the first place even though they are survivors.
I did not consider myself the "victim." If you know me, you know I am LOUD, generally strong, independent and rarely ask for help. But I grew into an unhealthy, co-dependent relationship. I allowed myself to slowly be isolated from friends and family. I found myself stuck, with a small child.
I went to therapy for a separate issue, at the urging of my partner. I was in such deep denial even that first round didn't free me much at all. It took a couple of years. It took a new therapist, it took learning that I could still trust my high school best friend so I told her. And then I told another friend. And then I told family.
And I was incredibly lucky. I learned I had a support system. I had nationwide resources, from finance to places to live to just acceptance. I was able to escape, able to be free to grow and learn and flourish.
But many people are so cut off by an abusive relationship that they have nothing. That's where places like Laurel House come in, where they save lives, not just of the victim/survivor but of the children and other family members impacted. I was lucky and now I pay it forward. Please consider helping me help others.
