Over the course of the past year, Literacy New Jersey's Atlantic-Cape and Ocean County programs have provided free literacy tutoring to 70 adult learners in our community. Your donation goes directly to providing 1:1 and small group instruction, training tutors who are proficient in remote and in-person learning, and equipping students with the materials and devices that enable them to participate in class.
Here are a few of our local accomplishments in 2023:
- Worked with Interfaith-RISE (refugee resettlement agency) to provide beginner English language classes to 11 recent arrivals from Ukraine, Haiti, and Afghanistan.
- Prepared 5 students for their US citizenship exams by offering quarterly Citizenship preparation classes. (They all passed!)
- Partnered with a local landscaping company to offer reading and writing instruction to employees.
- Engaged new basic literacy students with in-person offerings and held our first onsite classes since the start of the pandemic.
