Literacy NJ Monmouth helps change lives!

The quote above is from a current LNJ Monmouth basic literacy student who credits LNJ with changing his life. Brian is just one of 120 students currently in the Monmouth program working one-on-one or in a group class with one of our 42 tutors.

I am so proud to be the Program Director for LNJ Monmouth and work with students from all over the world and their amazing tutors who take time out of their busy lives to volunteer.

Literacy New Jersey helps recent immigrants (ESL) and basic literacy students increase their English speaking, reading and writing skills so that they can improve their lives.  Students are able to get better jobs, pass their road test to get a driver’s license, study for their GED or just improve their ability to read documents and street signs.

Here are a few of LNJ Monmouth’s accomplishments in 2023:

• Started a new in-person class at Middletown Library for ten ESL advanced beginner students.  This is the first large, in-person class that has met in-person since the height of the pandemic.
• Worked with IRISE (a refugee resettlement agency) to organize a class for six recent refugees from Ukraine. Most of the students now have jobs and got their driver’s licenses.
• Added four new basic literacy students to the program.
