I’ve been a volunteer literacy tutor for the past six years because I am passionate about helping adult learners read, write and speak English. I hope you’ll join in supporting the organization I work with, Literacy NJ, during our 3-day fundraising drive.

There are so many important nonprofits doing work that profoundly changes a person’s life, but you might not know about this one. 

• Just last year, in Monmouth County, 120 students worked with 42 tutors for more than 8,000 hours through Literacy NJ. 
• Across our state, almost 1,500 students worked with Literacy NJ to achieve goals like getting a job, receiving a high school diploma, driver’s license or US citizenship, or simply increasing their involvement in their kids’ education. 
• I treasure the time I spent with Dorthia Johnson, who didn’t finish elementary school and came to us for help in writing and delivering speeches to her Baptist church in Long Branch. 
• Now I work with a young mom from China who wants to improve her English rather than depend on her husband and kids to translate for her.  Some tutors are working with local Ukrainian refugees; others lead a group of Spanish-speaking parents of students in Long Branch public schools.

The money we raise will help pay for tutor training, books for our students, and other program costs. Thank you in advance for helping us to serve our community of ESL (English as a Second Language) and Basic Literacy learners!
