Imagine being new to a country and not being able to introduce yourself, go grocery shopping, ask directions, fill out a job application, talk to your children’s teachers, or talk to your doctor.
Imagine the feeling of frustration when every task -- no matter how small -- is always a difficult challenge. This is the daily experience of many new immigrants to the United States.
In addition to teaching native English speakers to read and write, Literacy New Jersey volunteer tutors have been teaching English for free to thousands of new immigrants since 1979.
I am proud to be one of those tutors.
In the past year, my ESL student--a former lawyer from Georgia--has learned to read, write and speak English; he has applied for and secured multiple jobs; gotten his driver’s license; and was even hired as a substitute teacher! Being his tutor has been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable jobs I’ve ever had.
Right now, the work of Literacy New Jersey is seriously endangered due to pending Federal budget cuts.
I believe new immigrants to the U.S. need our support now more than ever.
And I know you believe the same thing.
That’s why I’m asking for your support.
Please help us reach our 3-Day Challenge Goal, so this important work can continue.
Thank YOU!
