As a literacy tutor, I have been fortunate to help many students. Two of them were born in Long Branch and left school with below-average reading levels. They both have dyslexia. I was able to help one obtain his driver’s license and get a better job (Billy). I was able to help the other student with her Brookdale Community College classes (Kay-Ann).
Other past students have been immigrants from Syria (Lina), China (Anny), and Brazil (Larissa). They all have improved their reading, speaking, and comprehension of English.
My current students are from Cuba (Taimi) and the Dominican Republic (Marlene). They are low-level English speakers who are working hard to improve their skills.
Additionally, I have taught 3 Citizenship classes. I have been able to help 17 people become American citizens. They have come to the U.S. from Vietnam, Egypt, Russia, China, Ghana, El Salvador, Colombia, Turkistan, and Mexico.
Current action in Congress may cut off all funding for adult education.
