For the past 3+ years I have had the truly rewarding experience of being a a tutor with Literacy NJ - Monmouth. I have been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to recent immigrants from Egypt, Ukraine, Mexico and the country of Georgia.  These students have inspired me by their eagerness to learn, their commitment to improving their lives and their perseverance to overcome many obstacles. I have had a  student go from a job pumping gas to becoming a tractor trailer driver.. Another has become a teacher's aide and a third has passed an English Proficiency test and entered Monmouth University.  The changes in their lives have been remarkable and they are on their way to becoming fully participating members of their communities.

In additon to ESL, Literacy NJ provides basic literacy education for citizens who struggle to read and write and provides classes to help immigrants attain citizenship. Across the state, Literacy NJ provides these services to nearly 12,000 people a year but right now, its work is seriously endangered due to pending federal budget cuts. 

I believe new immigrants to the U.S. need our support now more than ever.  This is why I am participating in our 3-Day Challenge and why I am asking for your support while knowing how many similar requests you receive.
