Literacy truly has the power to change lives!

This is my 3^rd year volunteering as an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher for Literacy NJ.  My adult students come from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and the Ukraine. These are some of the most talented and hardworking people I’ve ever had the opportunity to know! Many of the students have university degrees and once held diverse, accomplished careers. But, due to their lack of English skills, they now work menial, low paying jobs such as a hotel housekeeper, prep cook and dishwasher. Their quest is to learn English so they can build a successful life and be a part of the American society. Just this month one of my students received their welding certification after completing 6-month welding course while another just passed her citizenship test!  I’m so proud of how much they’ve been able to accomplish because of their commitment to learning the English Language. 

I’m honored to volunteer my time to help my students achieve their goals.
