For the last twelve years I have seen first hand the impact Literacy NJ has had on people's lives. As a volunteer tutor I had the opportunity to help a couple from Colombia learn English, advance in their jobs, and eventually become citizens. Watching them take their oath of allegiance to the US for the first time remains one of my most treasured memories.
As a Literacy NJ staff member, I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of volunteer tutors dedicated to helping their students learn English, gain employment, help their children in school, earn a high school diploma, and replace failure with success.
This effort has continued through the pandemic, although not without challenges - we have had to develop new online training, purchase additional equipment and secure special software licenses...these extra costs put on a strain on our ability to provide services.
