Our son Gerald (G3) was born with a rare and critical congenital heart defect known as Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venus Return (TAPVR). His defect went undiagnosed until birth and he required immediate life-saving surgery at just 1 day old. His surgery was a success and we though our worst days were behind us. Unfortunately, at 6 months old we were informed that excessive scar tissue from his first surgery was causing obstruction and his heart was working overly hard putting him at risk for heart failure. G3 underwent his second surgery at 6 months old and although his surgery was a success his recovery would be much more complicated. G3 suffered two clinical seizures and a pediatric stroke during after surgery however, our strong and resilient boy didn’t let that hold him back and he was able to make a full recovery. We share G3’s story in hopes of helping other families like ours and because we know how important raising awareness and research funds can help children like G3 live long and healthier lives.
