Will you help us grow our programs to serve more children?
What We Do
“Teaching youth to succeed through literacy, education & life skills development” is the Las Vegas Rotary Club's Mission Statement
Each year our club sponsors up to 30 students from area schools to attend RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) and TLC (Teen Leadership Camp). The cost to sponsor each student is $350. The 3-day camps are hosted in the San Bernardino Mountains. Here students learn about themselves and their ability to adapt, make new friends, navigate new surroundings, and collaborate to complete projects. These camps help with students preparing to transition from middle school to high school (TLC) and high school to college or other learning opportunities (RYLA).
STEAM academies make the difference!
Through community partnerships with non profits like Green Our Planet and The Smith Center, Las Vegas Rotary Club's community grants go further. What we've realized for the students are test scores rising due to more engagement in the classroom via STEAM programs. What is STEAM? It is an approach to education that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. In other words, it's STEM but with arts programs added in! In this photo the students are selling the plants they grew at a Farmer's Market, combining science with business skills.
Spread The Word Nevada and Breakfast with Buddies
The education committee works hard to organize hands-on volunteer activities. Here you can see Rotarians Sidra, Debi, and Tonya helping children select their very own books to build a home library. Many children in our valley do not have books at home. For some, this is the first book they can call their own. You can find our members engaging with students at the six schools our club sponsors. • Beckley Elementary School https://www.beckleyes.org • Bracken Elementary School (STEAM Academy) https://www.brackensteamacademy.com • Long Elementary School https://www.long-ccsd.net • Hollingsworth Elementary School https://www.hollingsworthheroes.org • Quannah McCall Elementary School https://www.quannahmccallelementary.com • Dearing Elementary School https://dearingelementary.org
Rotarians deliver free wheelchairs to kids!
We are proud to announce something new this year. Through the club's 20-year partnership with The Wheelchair Foundation, Rotarians can now deliver pediatric wheelchairs. Big smiles for the kids and their parents! In this photo Rotarian John Williams receives the gift of giving!
Santa Clothes brings Christmas the first week in December for the 28th year!
I think these smiles say it all. In 2023 friends, partners, and Rotarians shopped with 366 children. It takes hundreds of volunteer hours and about $75K to pull this event off every year. This past year alone, our Rotary club has donated: • $236,500 in cash donations • 7,400 volunteer hours • Over $80,800 in goods and services. Rotary International Theme 2023-2024
Rotary International supports local grants through District Designated Funds. Clubs match these funds to reach more people in need to build and create lasting friendships. If you like what we do here, you will love what we do around the world.
Rotarian Gwen is the club liaison to Walter Bracken Elementary
Rotarians act as liaisons at the six elementary schools supported by the club. Liaisons coordinate volunteers for special programs at the schools from reading week to farmer's markets.
Community Partnerships - The Wheelchair Foundation and Las Vegas Rotary Club
Last year, Rotarians from our club delivered a wheelchair to their first repeat customer. Why is this important? It reveals a 20-year relationship delivering wheelchairs to members of our community. When the original wheelchair wore out, the recipient called again and we were glad he did! It's difficult to believe how many families lives have been changed because of the generosity of others. If you like what we do, please support this fundraiser.
Santa Clothes means new shoes and socks!
One of the first stops at community partner JC Penney, is the shoe department, next up is warm winter jackets followed by pants, tops, and underwear. Volunteers collaborate with their little shoppers to pick their favorite colors and themes and try to reach a set amount like $225 before JC Penney adds the discounts. For 28 years, JC Penney team members volunteer their time to help the shoppers before the store opens for normal business. Tell them you think this is great the next time you stop into one of the three area JCP stores.
