About this fundraiser:

There is no question that health care in the United States is too expensive. In Denver specifically, medical debt is the leading cause of homelessness. Necessary medicine like insulin can cost up to $500/month and an ER visit can cost up to $3,000. Over 60% of people filing for bankruptcy in the United States are doing so (at least in part) because of medical debt. (The Guardian). In fact, America ranks among Haiti and Iraq for providing health care for all citizens (End Medical Debt). Even with health insurance, paying medical bills can be a challenge for many families.

Our healthcare system is begging for reform, but tackling that level of systems change can seem overwhelming. As a 17-year-old high school student, I didn't know what to do when faced with this issue. I knew I wanted to help, but I didn't know how I could make an impact. 

I then learned about RIP Medical Debt. RIP Medical Debt buys medical debt from debt collectors at a rate of 1:100, meaning every $1 raised can abolish $100 of medical debt. This organization makes a change that affects peoples' daily lives, and I was excited for this opportunity to make tangible change in my community. 

I have launched this Colorado campaign with a goal of $15,000, which means $1.5M of medical debt can be abolished. When my goal is met, all of the available debt in Denver County will be eradicated!
