Mrs. Leavell's Grant Wish --

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often referred to as "the Nation’s Report Card," has shown a decline in reading scores across the U.S. Decodable books play a crucial role in this approach by providing students with texts that align with their current phonics knowledge, allowing them to apply what they’ve learned and build confidence in their reading abilities. Our district’s curriculum does follow a structured literacy approach and includes some decodable texts within its framework. However, the decodable texts provided are primarily workbook style, which limits their use. The current texts are effective for teacher-led activities during small group time but are not ideal for independent use. Currently, we do not have a sufficient supply of standalone decodable books that students can use in stations, take home for additional practice, or read during independent reading time. To address this gap, teachers often purchase these texts on their own. This proposal is aimed at filling that need by providing decodable books that students can use both in the classroom and at home, thereby enhancing their reading development.
