As an anesthesiologist, I see every day how powerful surgery can be. A single operation can relieve pain, restore function, and completely change the course of a person’s life. But around the world, millions of people live with treatable conditions simply because they do not have access to safe surgical care.

This is where Mercy Ships makes an extraordinary difference.

Mercy Ships operates hospital ships staffed by volunteer surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and medical professionals who travel to countries where access to surgery is extremely limited. On board these ships, patients receive completely free surgeries—including tumor removals, cleft lip and palate repairs, orthopedic procedures and other life-changing operations.

For many patients, this is the only chance in their lifetime to receive the care they need.

This April, I will attempt to summit Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet.

I am dedicating this climb to raising funds for Mercy Ships.

Every step up the mountain represents a step toward helping someone receive the surgical care they desperately need. My goal is to raise $1,000 to support the life-saving work performed by Mercy Ships’ volunteer teams.
