Why I Walk
It is easy to feel powerless against a tide of injustice and inhumanity. Many of us take some comfort from the growing wave of national activism. Even as we dig in for that long and challenging struggle, we can continue to make an immediate difference in our local communities. That's why I am walking for Marin foster kids.
About Marin Foster Care Association
The abused and neglected children sheltering in Marin foster care comprise the county’s most vulnerable population. Each child travels a unique path of trauma and deprivation to arrive in foster care; all are frightened and confused by the removal from their homes. 90% of Marin’s foster children come from economically disadvantaged homes and 57% are members of racial minority groups that are often geographically and socially isolated from Marin’s predominately white and wealthy population. In addition, many Marin foster children exhibit significant educational and experiential deficits that contribute to their sense of “otherness”.
While serving on the Board at Marin Foster Care Association I have been moved by the remarkable resilience of foster children in the face of such challenges. Sometimes it takes so little to ignite the hope and confidence that a foster child needs to begin to heal: appropriate clothing and supplies for school; a tutor who helps the child catch up if she’s fallen behind; a chance to join in afterschool sports and activities with classmates. Marin Foster Care Association provides all these things, as well as education, advocacy and support that enables caregivers to deliver the highest quality care while families work to overcome the impediments to reunification.
Thank you for your support!
