NYCGMC Membership Fundraising Drive 2019

"I think you should try out for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus."  No, this is not me telling you what to do with your life.  This was a direct quote from my mother, in the late summer of 2001, telling me what to do with mine.  Whatever reservations I had, as a good Jewish boy, I did what my mother suggested.  And like all mothers, she was right.

As I begin my 19th season in the Chorus, I look back at some of the highlights:

• Singing at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall
• Appearing on Good Morning America following the Pulse Nightclub shooting
• Performing at Joan Rivers' memorial service
• Singing for Tyler Clementi's family at their church
• Sharing the stage with such luminaries as Elaine Stritch, Kelli O'Hara, Judy Collins, Jackie Hoffman, Jenifer Lewis, to name a few,

While these were indeed special moments, nothing compares to the people I have met.  From that dark day in September of 2001, when I received a call from a chorus member I had yet to meet, checking to see if I was okay, I knew I had joined a special group.  What I didn't yet know was that I would come to know extraordinary people, some of whom I count as my closest friends. 

I am fortunate to have both a biological family and a chosen family whom I adore.  My parents have attended nearly every concert since December of 2001 and my niece, who was not yet born when I became a member, attended her first concert in March of 2018.
