Welcome to the NYCGMC 2019 Membership Fundraising Drive!
As I enter my 9th season with the Chorus I could and probably should tell you about all of the amazing ways that being a part of the Chorus has changed my life. I could list off the many unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences I've gotten to be a part of because of my involvement with the chorus. I could rattle off the benefits of being with a group of diverse yet somehow like-minded individuals has given me a community, a place to make NYC feel like home, and a support system when things have gotten rough for me. I could even draw up a list of the wonderful work that this Chorus has done for the LGBTQ+ community throughout its 40 years of existence.
While those things are all true, I'm not going to do all of that. I don't need to give you the hard sell. After all, I'm sharing this with you: someone whom I know and trust, someone that has witnessed the impact of this organization on my life whether you've known me for a short while or for a lifetime, someone whom understands what this group means to me.
Instead, I'm going to simply share that the greatest thing this Chorus has done for me is allow me to find myself. It's given me a chance to explore and build myself both as a person and as a musician. Whether it's singing in the main chorus, being a featured drag queen, or singing in tight harmony with my TONEWALL acappella family, this group has afforded me the avenues to lean into my full potential. And with 275+ singers, each of us have a unique and personal reason why this Chorus means so much to us.
So now comes the hard sell part. All of that self-actualizing shit? It's not free. People need to get paid. Music hall rentals are hella expensive in NYC. Music licensing is exorbitant and of the devil but we gotta pay the piper if we're going to play his music. So once a year, we hit up our nearest chumps friends, family, coworkers, acquaintances, current and or former hookups, etc. in order to help us reach our fundraising goal for the year.
My personal goal is $200, which is well below the price of what we all get out of the NYCGMC + TONEWALL. Would you be so generous as to help us keep doing what we do for now and for years to come?
