What is happening in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is a country that has been stricken with conflict, war, and poverty for decades. This is largely due to political mishap, lack of security for food, the need for foreign influence, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participation of women in society and access to good education for girls is a continued area of concern. The country is also adversely affected by global warming, which has caused drought and led to the loss of crops and livestock. Additionally, insecurity and violence have displaced millions of Afghan people, both inside and outside the country.

According to Aryana Aid, poverty in Afghanistan stems from two factors: “food insecurity and the lack of a social security net.” As a result, 50 percent of Afghan children are stunted and 20 percent of Afghan women of child-bearing age are underweight.

Approximately 70,792 Afghan families are taking refuge in unclean makeshift camps; 25 percent of those families have been living there for more than ten years.

Only 28 percent of the entire Afghan population 15 years and older are literate.

Furthermore, half of the people living in both rural and urban regions have no access to clean water.

Afghanistan is consistently stricken with conflict, war, and poverty for decades, with a political mishap, lack of security for food, and the impact of the pandemic, especially on women and children. The money being donated will help give food and essential items, as well as the lives of refugees.

Islamic Relief’s Response to Current Situation for Families in Afghanistan and Refugees in the U.S.

Irusa has committed a lot of time and dedication to help the Afghans both back home in Afghanistan and refugees here in the USA. They have made a commitment of $2.1 million dollars to help the people in Afghanistan along with the refugees. Through the regional office in Kabul, Balkh, Herat, and Nangar-Har provinces IRUSA distributes many items such as

  • Food aids

  • Emergency Tents and tools for pitching

  • Non-Food Items that are essential such as cooking pots, utensils, soaps, detergents, solar-powered lamps, and towels

  • Water storage and hygiene kits to help family with less resources

Islamic relief was able to distribute food packages to families who were faced with one of the worst food insecurities in the world which occurred on Oct. 10. Without IR’s support many Afghan families would have continued to experience harsh life. IR has received support from the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs to begin winterization and health projects for local families in Afghanistan. Many emergency relief items will be transported across the border from IR pakistan.

What is IRUSA going for Afghan refugees in the USA?

IRUSA teams are working hard to deliver essential items to help the refugees smoothly transfer into a new life in communities. Many items and work is being put in by IRUSA such as

  • Providing food aid including 10,000 food boxes containing nutrient-dense dry food items for resettled Afghan refugee families

  • On arrival, we’re working with the United Way of the National Capital Area (NCA) to provide greeting/service orientations, transportation from the airport, interpreters, and pre-paid debit cards to purchase essential items

  • Engaging our local refugee network to give much-needed resources that assist with local resettlement efforts

  • Creating an IRUSA guide on religious and cultural sensitivities for Afghan refugees for use by other humanitarian organizations

  • Distributing essential hygiene and sanitation items including hygiene kits, socks, underwear, soap, hand sanitizer, and masks

  • Working with shelters and religious leaders to ensure newly-arriving families receive the sheltering, emotional care, spiritual care, and cultural items they need like the 500 prayer mats we delivered to Afghan refugee families

  • We’re advocating and amplifying the voices of our Afghan brothers and sisters and you can get involved

  • We’re also working to provide legal support and financial aid for refugee families in the near future

Your donations are NEEDED to continue helping change Afghans' lives every day. With your continued generosity, IRUSA can provide basic necessities to Afghan refugees as well as Afghans back home making their lives easier. Your donation will be highly appreciated by Afghans as well as IRUSA. Please scroll down and donate below!

IRUSA has served in Afghanistan for more than 20 years, and continues to provide humanitarian and development assistance in the country today.

We have regional offices in Kabul and four other provinces in the country: Herat, Bamyan, Nangar-har, and Balkh. Through these offices, we are able to quickly and accurately assess the needs on the ground and provide immediate relief including emergency food, shelter, and medical relief.

Some of the projects we’ve implemented in Afghanistan include:

  • Winter aid for families vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, including blankets, mattresses, firewood, food, and more
  • Orphan support and vocational training for women-lead households
  • Educational programs for women and girls
  • Food distributions during Ramadan and Qurbani/Udhiyah
  • Medicine for patients at hospitals in Kabul
