What's going on in Afghanistan?
Due to political instability, food insecurity, and the COVID-19 pandemic, most of Afghanistan’s population currently lives in poverty. Right now, the situation is tense, as millions of children and families don’t have enough food to sustain themselves. According to the United Nations, if action isn’t taken soon, 97% of Afghans will be living under the poverty line.
What is Islamic Relief USA doing to help Afghanistan?
Islamic relief is distributing food aid, water storage units, hygiene kits, essentials, and emergency tents to everyone in Afghanistan who needs it through their offices in Kabul, Balkh, Herat, and Nangar-har. IRUSA is also starting health programs in Afghanistan. Right now, they are providing food aid through 10,000 food boxes, and are working to provide greeting orientation services and transportation. They are also distributing hygienic products and sanitation items, including masks. IRUSA has provided winter aid to Afghani families, orphan support, and education programs for women and girls.
How is APA's Humanitarian Service team raising money for IRUSA for Afghanistan?
Our team hosted a number of events, including a bake sale, a ‘dress out day,’ and passing out fundraising flyers at masjids. The bake sale took place at our school, and was directed towards elementary, middle, and high school students. The ‘dress out day’ was directed towards middle and high school, and it was a one day option to pay a $2 fee to wear clothes containing the Afghanistan flag colors. We passed out flyers at the Islamic Center of Greater Austin before and after Jummah prayers, and put up flyers in various other masjids. We also reached out to Muslim influencers, various Muslim organizations, and the overall Muslim community. We were able to reach many people and build up a lot of support for the cause.
