Humanitarian Crises in Sudan: A Comprehensive Summary

Civil War: Sudan has been experiencing severe political and economic crises since 2003. However, these problems have been exacerbated in April 2023, when a major conflict broke out between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), the national military force of Sudan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary force led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. The violence has spread to the rest of the country and intensified Sudan’s crises from decades prior, resulting in over 12,000 deaths and leaving nearly 24.8 million people, or half of the Sudanese population, in dire need of humanitarian aid and protection (IRC).

Mass Displacement: Sudan is now recognized as the country with the highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs), people who have been forced to leave their homes but remain within their country, in the world. The United Nations reported nearly 9.05 million IDPs and, of this, nearly 4 million are children. There are also many Sudanese refugees, with over 1.4 million people fleeing to neighboring countries.

Collapsing Structures and Systems: Integral structures and systems are collapsing within the country. More than 70% of the health facilities in conflict-affected regions of Sudan are inoperable (WHO). This is especially a cause for concern as there has been a 103% increase in disease; around 10,000 cholera cases have been reported in areas where IDPs are taking refuge, as well as an outbreak of measles, which killed over 1,000 children (WHO). Furthermore, the war has left the economy in a detrimental state, as it has destroyed many companies and industrial regions, left thousands unemployed, and reduced the Sudanese pound to half its value (Sudan Tribune).

Food Insecurity: Food insecurity also poses a great threat. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that around 17.7 million people, or 37% of the population, are experiencing crisis levels of food insecurity. According to the World Food Programme, 75% of these people are in areas where access is incredibly limited due to severe fighting and restrictions.

Women and Children: Women and children have been greatly impacted by these crises. The UNHCR has stated that 90% of the refugees crossing the borders exiting Sudan are women and children. Furthermore, at least 10,400 schools in conflict-affected areas are shuttered, leaving at least 19 million chi. ldren without education and at risk of abuse and exploitation (UNICEF). Furthermore, 4 million Sudanese women and children are at risk of sexual violence (WHO).

Through your generous donations, we can help improve the conditions in Sudan - one step at a time.
