Yemen's Crisis: Context
Context- With tensions arising in 2014, Yemen's civil war began in 2015 from the clash between the Houthi Rebels and the Saudi-Coalition-backed Yemeni Government or the Internationally Recognized Government of Yemen (IRG). The Houthis (Shiite rebels) had links with Iran so the Saudi coalition began economic isolation and warfare against the Houthi insurgents. The conflict in Yemen now reaching eight years has depreciated the economy( the Yemeni Riyal has dropped in value as well), jeopardizing the efficiency of basic public services. Additionally, with the destruction of oil fields and infrastructure, the country's oil economic sector is depressed so currency for importing food is almost impossible. With a combination of insufficient access to proper healthcare, low immunization coverage, and poor child-feeding practices, in Yemen, there is a prevalence of several diseases like diarrhea, measles, & Acute Respiratory Infections. Lastly, Yemen faces extreme risks from severe droughts and rainfalls that lead to flooding that have only been amplified with the onset of climate change. According to the 2023 HRP, "Natural hazards and disasters double related displacement in 2022, damaged public and civilian infrastructure and impacted the delivery of essential services. "
Statistics-
- 21.6 million people in Yemen are in dire need of humanitarian assistance and protection services, two-thirds of the population (as of March 2023).
- Over 17 million people in Yemen cannot afford sufficient food to meet their daily needs and 4.5 million people are internally displaced.
Issues-
1) Education- Because of conflict-related damage and disruption, 8.6 million school-aged children need education assistance. And during the 2022 floods that impacted 368 schools, 1.5 million school-age children could not learn.
2) Food insecurity- Because of funding cuts and recently in 2022 the prices of food skyrocketing from inflation, Yemen is one of the most food-insecure countries in the world. It is predicted that with seasonal trends and the reduction of humanitarian food assistance in Sanaa, this situation is only going to worsen.

Islamic Relief's Solution
Islamic Relief in Yemen- Islamic Relief, a faith-based humanitarian agency, has been collaborating with communities, UN agencies like the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), national/international NGOs like the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the World Food Programme, local authorities and of course the wide network of donors, to provide relief.
Food Programmes- 80% of families cannot guarantee their next meal. Islamic Relief alongside the UN World Food Programme provides essential food support to families by distributing food vouchers and packages. Packages usually contain staples like rice, oil, and flour that will be sufficient for those families in crisis.
Water/Sanitation/Hygiene Programmes- Undervelopment, damage from the conflict, unreliable fuel imports, and natural disasters have deteriorated basic water/sanitation/hygiene services. Islamic relief delivers hygiene sessions to combat the spread of water-borne diseases like cholera and helps communities by improving these services and organizing waste management.
Health Care- Islamic Relief works with communities and healthcare facilities to provide preventative care to combat malnutrition. Additionally to rebuild the healthcare system, Islamic Relief endows training, equipment, and lab solutions to health centers and hospitals. This could be providing medical machines that manufacture artificial limbs or during COVID-19 with the distribution of emergency hygiene items along with promoting prevention and control methods.
Child Welfare Support- Islamic Relief alleviates the situation of many vulnerable kids in Yemen. So far, they have sponsored 6,000 orphans in Yemen giving a regular stipend towards them for needs and schooling. Prioritizing Education as well in this relief, Islamic relief expands accessibility to preschool and basic schooling by improving water, sanitation, and hygiene of schools while also with guardians offering vocational training & livelihood support. Child protection efforts are also seen with counseling support for these vulnerable children. For the youth who have dreams and aspirations, Islamic Relief coordinates with the Ministry of Planning and international cooperation to nurture livelihoods(help them earn a living) and also give higher education. To maintain optimism as well, Islamic Relief on days of celebration like Eid supply Qurbani Meat and Eid Gifts.
Incentives
Our team, Edison Empowered, though just a group of six members plans to utilize all our networks and resources to raise as much money as we can. Firstly though, we prioritized raising awareness about the crisis because this humanizes the issue and helps donors understand why their donations are important and make them more likely to contribute. Some efforts/ ideas we plan to implement are:
- Extensive Social Media Campaign- Push out visually appealing and comprehensive media detailing the situation and asking for donations. These can be in the form of reposting and crediting video coverage in Yemen, infographics, posters, and relevant reels. Additionally, we created a page on Facebook to reach out to older audiences, boosting reach with hashtags.
- Promotion everywhere- Posters in school hallways, advertising to teachers, mass messages/emails to loved ones and associates.
- Partnerships- Asking the bigger Muslim Student Association to encourage donors as well as the student council/other student clubs to reach more audiences. Other ideas can be to partner with local restaurants to donate a portion of their proceeds on a specific day to the Yemen Orphan's support. Also, can ask local businesses or individuals to match donations and have more word of the donations if we offer recognition or thank-you gifts.
- Bake Sales/Food Grams- Organize bake sales after school or sell cookie/brownie grams throughout the school day and have funds be donated to the cause. Additionally, for more awareness, incorporate cultural food or a theme to raise more awareness. Ideal areas can be in Masjids/Islamic centers or any religious center, in the school/campus.
