Moore Family on Mission
In 2000 Kara and I got married and moved to South Carolina. While there, we visited the MV Caribbean Mercy, docked in Charleston and got to know Mercy Ships. We immediately fell in love with their mission of restoring sight, mobility and hope to those who could never afford it, walking out the example of Jesus, in the Spirit of Jesus. We began to apply for positions to serve and that's when we learned that Kara was pregnant with our first baby. We paused one worthwhile pursuit and dove wholeheartedly into another. Five kids and 23 years later, we've come full circle and are ready to begin our journey again!
In February, 2023, the MV Africa Mercy arrived in Toamasina, Madagascar and would perform over 1200 surgeries to remove tumors, correct leg development and rebuild some beautiful smiles. Crew also provided training for land-based clinics while working side by side with the local community and government. In 2024, Kara and I were invited to serve along with our two daughters. And are now in 2025 we have begun our second field service, as the AFM has already begun the program of providing 2700 surgeries and many other health care and training connections.
I am serving in the role of Chaplain / Counselor, using training in mental health and biblical studies to support the crew in their spiritual and personal health; and Kara in the role of Chaplain / PCG, using training in ministry and church administration, helping other families transition to ship life and helping connect AFM crew to local church partnership opportunities. As AFM Chaplains, we both serve the ship in a missional / pastoral role, preaching, teaching and providing spiritual growth support and guidance to a crew from 34+ different nations, backgrounds and traditions. We are so blessed to be a part of this and feel like we were made for this work.
To make this happen, we will rely exclusively on donor support, and can make this happen on a minimal budget of $60K a year. This factors in our biggest expenses travel to and from Madagascar. Also factored in is insurance, repatriation, sharing with local patners and everything else regarding day to day living expenses like clothes, tooth paste, etc.
We are so grateful to the individuals and organizations who have contributed. Every bit is so helpful. If you have stable income and wish to be a part of this, consider a commitment to $50 a month, which would help us tremendously by helping us plan and budget. If you are able to make a one time contribution of $1 that too would bless us so much. In short, we would be so honored if you supported this amazing work by helping send us to be a part of this global community outreach in whatever way makes sense for you.
We also believe that we're all called to pray and support in different ways. We believe in a God that answers prayers. So we also solicit your continued prayers for wisdom, grace and favor. Would you consider becoming a prayer partner of ours and committing to praying with your family for us once a week? We are also so encouraged when people write us notes of encouragement to let us know they are praying for us.
Thank you so much for thinking of us and support us!
Ryan, Kara, Evangeline and Selah Moore
