Together with our three children, Elin, Hanne, and Tobin, we will be boarding the Global Mercy starting from the summer of 2024. Currently, we reside in Amstelveen. Berdien has worked for years as a pediatric nurse at Amsterdam UMC. Harm has worked for international companies, most recently for Digital Realty as Head of Strategy and Business Development.
A brief period aboard the Africa Mercy in 2011 gave us immense appreciation for the work of Mercy Ships. The life-changing inspiration and experience then, and the hope and healing brought by the ships to fellow humans in Africa, have always stayed with us. That calling to serve God and fellow humans found a place in our hearts, and we expressed to each other the desire to return someday and serve this mission for a longer period.
What does your future look like now?
Now the time has come, and we will be on board the Global Mercy for at least two years. Returning to Mercy Ships in the summer of 2024 also means returning to Sierra Leone. We look forward to serving this country again with our time and abilities. Our jobs in the Netherlands have been resigned, and the suitcases will soon be packed. Our three children will receive education at the Mercy Ships Academy, the international school on board. Harm will be responsible for the media and communication team in his role as Director Communications. This team creates content used by Mercy Ships worldwide in their marketing campaigns and serves as a contact for local and international media. Berdien has taken on the role of Primary Care Giver and will initially focus on ensuring the children settle in well on board. She hopes to then use her passion for fellow humans and her qualities as a pediatric nurse.
