In 1992, at the age of 32, I was diagnosed with Ataxia.  Myself and 2 of my siblings have inherited this disease from my father.  Ataxia is a disease that targets the cerebellum, and over time progressively limits the cerebellum's proper functioning. It shares some traits with a few common diseases of the nervous system such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, and Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).  In all of these diseases, a specific area of the brain is targeted and the disease robs its victims of their ability to coordinate movement. With Ataxia, walking, talking, holding objects, eye contact, even swallowing becomes monumental and for some, an insurmountable task. 

Much knowledge has been gained since my dad was diagnosed.  Back in 1956, my dad was told that he did not have MS, but had something called Ataxia.  Nothing more was known about it at that time, so my dad continued practicing medicine and growing his young family with the help of his strong and capable wife, my mom.
