Who Is RIP Medical Debt?

RIP Medical Debt uses donations to purchase bundled medical debt portfolios that have gone through collection agencies for months or years. Using third-party credit data providers, it targets debt incurred by people facing financial hardship, and then forgives it. On average, $1 is leveraged to abolish $100 in medical debt.

About this Fundraiser:

I’m pretty lucky.  I have a great health insurance plan - but many people don’t, or they don’t have one at all.  Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, medical debt primarily from hospital stays was crushing families across North Carolina. Two-thirds of all personal bankruptcies are tied to a medical event, either because of high costs of care or because it causes the person to be out of work. Then, not only do families have to deal with physical and mental recovery, they are cash-strapped.  Then they must endure endless calls from bill collectors.

As an individual, I thought there was not much I can do to provide support in this time of COVID.  Then thanks to reporting by John Oliver, who you may know from Last Week Tonight, I’ve set a goal to release $1,500,000 of medical debt exclusively for North Carolina families.  For every dollar donated, RIP Medical Debt will purchase $100 worth of medical debt, permanently wiping it away.  Gone.  Zip.  Zero.

To do this, I’m matching every $1 donated, to reach a donation goal of $15,000 by Christmas. RIP Medical Debt uses the funds to buy $1,500,000 of debt, and every single dollar of your donation goes toward that purchase. Then, bada bing, they cancel the debt and notify the families.  This is the best holiday gift you can give!  North Carolina families can begin to get their lives back without having to choose between putting a roof over their heads or food on the table - and paying medical bills.

Let’s make this holiday matter for those who need it most.
