Three years ago on February 20th, 2015, our lives were changed forever when our daughter Jane was stillborn at 37/38 weeks gestation. Amanda was healthy and went to every doctor’s appointment. We never thought this would happen to us and there is not a day that goes by that we don’t think about Jane or how different life would be if she were here with us.

We were fortunate to find out what happened to our baby girl. Many parents of stillborn children never find out the reason and are told to “try again”. Families are left feeling empty, ashamed and their grief is misunderstood.

In August, 2015, Mark and Amanda, along with a few other families, started the first ever chapter of the Star Legacy Foundation, a non-profit focused on stillbirth research, education, awareness and support. Today, Star Legacy has 8 chapters across the US and 9 more are getting up and running! We create a space for grieving families and we raise critical funds to further stillbirth research, education and awareness. Many of these babies, including our Jane, are perfectly healthy and there is another risk that presents itself in pregnancy that could be mitigated. We need to better understand these risks so we can begin to change the statistic of 1 in 160 pregnancies ending in stillbirth. That’s 26,000 babies every year in the US alone.
