A few years ago my family ran in the Superhero 5k race in Safety Harbor FL. We all wore superhero capes and traded off pushing my youngest in a stroller as we jogged to benefit a local charity. As with most races, at the finish line there were a number of organizations present with games and activities for families to enjoy. Most of the groups had tables and tents with games like beanbag toss, spin the wheel to get a prize, velcro arrows, etc, but one station was DIFFERENT.
One station had a WHITE BUS surrounded by artists of all ages who were painting wildly colorful and joyful designs all over the wheels, windows, sides, and bumpers. There were no rules, just a simple invitation to pick up some paint, get creative, and have fun!
This was my introduction to NOMAD Studio: a group of artists, advocates, and activists who use the power of art to build happier, healthier communities. They do this by consistently bringing creative opportunities and resources to underserved groups such as children in the foster care system, youth in the juvenile justice centers, and neighborhood children who are not typically able to participate in fee-based arts programs. Over the past 10 years the artists have created a deep sense of belonging, where the children know that they are valued and that their voices are important.
