I am thrilled to say I will be running the 2023 New York City Marathon with the Children's Heart Foundation. This incredible opportunity combines my passion for running with my desire to bring awareness and support for such a worthy cause. The Children's Heart Foundation funds the most promising research and advancement for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of congenital heart disease.
As some of you may be aware, I was born with a congenital heart defect known as a ventricular septal defect. This is a hole between the lower chambers of the left and right ventricles. For 35 years I lived a relatively normal and healthy life, aside from yearly cardiology appointments. However, in February of this year, after months of experiencing high fevers, night sweats, fatigue and weight loss, with no relief or diagnosis from my local doctors, I was taken to the emergency room. As a young mom, perpetual marathoner and someone who has never been sick more than a day in my life - this experience was terrifying. An onslaught of scope procedures, CTs, ultrasounds, echocardiograms and MRIs uncovered that I had a severe blood infection (Septicemia) which had spread to my heart and caused an infectious mass; officially diagnosed as Endocarditis. I was hospitalized for a week while the infection was monitored and intravenous antibiotics could be administered through a midline port which continued for several more weeks at home.
By running for the Children's Heart Foundation and sharing my personal story, I aim to bring awareness, support and funding to a cause I am so passionate about. Each contribution, no matter the size, directly funds research projects and resources for children and their families who face this diagnosis. Please join me in helping transform and improve the lives of these little heart warriors!
