I started volunteering with the Cape Fear Literacy Council almost 20 years ago! I remain inspired and motivated by this wonderful organization that does important, meaningful work. CFLC trains volunteers who serve as 1-on-1 tutors and small class teachers so each adult student - with diverse learning goals - has a tailored educational experience. This grassroots approach works because tutors integrate both evidence-based curricula and real-life materials to make sure content is at the right level and is relevant for each learner. Most importantly, the students at the Literacy Council are working hard to improve their skills, which also increases their confidence. CFLC empowers adult learners have greater self-agency, get better jobs, better support their children, and be more engaged in the community.
