I lost my Old English Bulldog, Peaches, in 2015. I was heartbroken, and it took me several years before I was ready to get another companion. But even though I wasn't ready to get another dog, I missed cuddling and taking care of a fur baby! I decided to volunteer at the Humane Society in Colorado Springs. Out of all the positions that the Humane Society offers I ended up choosing to work in the surgery center. I thought I would be most useful there since I know how awful I feel before and after surgery; it couldn't be any different for the animals. I wanted to make that time for them as comfortable as possible.
During my 2 and a half years volunteering I got to see how the whole facility operated, and the amount of care and energy the people working there put into making the HSPPR a safe and healthy place for not only the animals but for the people fostering and adopting too. I got to see firsthand how much time, money and medicine goes into each animal’s stay while they are prepped for adoption.
I ended up moving out of state for a few years but when I came back to Colorado Springs I brought with me my precious little Bobbie Jo! Bobbie Jo is a miniature Austrailan Shepherd who loves hiking and doing her agility training. This past December she got a little brother named Atlas! We got Atlas from the HSPPR when he was 3 months old and is one of the sweetest and most loving dogs I've ever met! Atlas is technically a mut but is mostly a mix between a Pit Bull Terrier and a Great Pyrenees. I credit his sweet disposition to his breed but also to the care and attention of the Humane Society while he was in their watch as a puppy!
