My Life was changed forever on the day my Jersey girl came home from the Capital Area Humane Society. I fell in love with her immediately...and so did every person who met her. I had no intention of even bringing a dog home that day, but the Universe knew differently.
Jersey was a petite, but strong, pit bull mix...as full of muscles as she was with heart. She had the most beautiful brown eyes that would look straight into your soul and a big tan spot that covered her left eye. She had a loving spirit, but you could tell that she had been through much harder times than she ever should have...especially since she was only about 7 months old. She had a wisdom about her that could be felt when she was near you... like she somehow knew exactly what you needed to hear and could communicate it to you even though she couldn't say a word. She was incredible.
It took some time for Jersey to let me in and she kept to herself at first. The vet said that she'd already given birth to a litter of puppies which was shocking to me considering how young she was... but unfortunately that is what is sometimes forced upon young female dogs by people who want to profit from puppies. She was terrified to use the stairs and for the first few months, she refused to go into the basement even though it was a finished family room and didn't feel like a basement at all. I think Jersey suffered at the bottom of some stairs somplace before the wonderful people at Humane Society rescued her. The person we spoke to there told us that Jersey could be agressive and that the kids should be very careful around her, but I knew it was just becasue she was afraid. I knew she wouldn't hurt anyone and I promised her she could let her guard down and that she would be safe... it turns out that she was the one who would keep me safe until I was able to do so for myself. When I could, our bond grew even stronger. We would go on long walks together, watch the sun set on warm evenings, and often just sit quietly together...grateful for the peace that we found.
I lost Jersey to Cancer in February 2020, right before the pandemic... she was only 4 1/2 years old and I was crushed. There is a hole in my heart that I know will never fully heal, but every time I volunteer at Humane Society or another local animal shelter, I see her in the eyes of every dog there. I feel her spirit full of the love that every dog deserately wants to share. I can't imagine what my world would be like if it wasn't for The Humane Soceity where I found my perfect girl on a random January Day. I believe that there is a puppy match for every person and Humane Society is a beautiful way for dogs to find their way home. I want to support Humane Society in every way I can and I hope you will help me.
