Team Blue Turkeys* was created in 2024 in honor of someone very close to all of us. Shirley Gardner was an important part of all our lives as a mother, an aunt, and a grandmother. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease back in 2019, and there were only treatments available to manage symptoms and slow progression. So despite everyone's best efforts, Shirley's health worsened over the years as a result and she lost her battle with ILD on November 19, 2022. She left behind a lasting impression on all of us who knew her personally. Our hope with fundraising is that we can get closer to finding a cure or treatment that can help reverse or further prevent the impacts of ILD and other diagnosis related to Pulmonary Fibrosis.

* Background about our Team Name - it was a Thanksgiving like any other Thanksgiving. It was Shirley's turn to host and she had heard about a new trick to keep the turkey from getting too dry while roasting in the oven. So she wrapped up the turkey in a pillowcase, but it wasn't just any pillow case - it was a nice blue silk pillow case (her favorite color). Unfortunately we never learned if this trick works, but we learned a great way to dye a turkey! Not a Thanksgiving has gone by since, that we haven't mentioned that blue turkey!
