About Our Fundraiser:
The Black Belt Region in Alabama is a swath of dark prairie soil stretching from the Georgia border across Alabama to the Mississippi border. It is a region of history and great natural beauty. However there are 10 of the poorest counties in the state in this area. These counties are: Chambers, Macon, Lowndes, Dallas, Wilcox, Perry, Hale, Greene, Sumter, and Pickens. The poverty rate in these counties, according to the US Census, range from 18.7% up to 35.3%. Approximately 173,000 people live in these counties. There is about $13,000,000 in medical debt in these counties.
In February, 2020, two members of the Advent Sunday School class at Southminster Presbyterian Church called the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley with the proposal to raise money to eliminate the medical debt in the Black Belt. The Presbytery’s Executive Council unanimously agreed to sponsor Project Empathy. Our goal is to raise $50,000 in order to eliminate $5,000,000 of the medical debt. Hopefully we will exceed our goal.
This Project will aid the poor in some of the most poverty-stricken regions of our state. By this we can help lessen the burden of the people’s debts. Come and help us combat poverty and show God’s love.

RIP Medical Debt’s Solution: RIP Medical Debt uses donations to purchase bundled medical debt portfolios that have gone through collection agencies for months or years. Using third-party credit data providers, it targets debt incurred by people facing financial hardship, and then forgives it. On average, $1 is leveraged to abolish $100 in medical debt.

Who is RIP Medical Debt? RIP Medical Debt (RIP) is a national 501c3 nonprofit organization with a mission to empower donors to forgive the billions of dollars in oppressive medical debt at pennies on the dollar. RIP locates, buys, and abolishes destructive medical debt for individuals, veterans, and families. Since inception in 2014, RIP has relieved more than $600 million in medical debt for individuals across the U.S., impacting over 250,000 individuals.
How Does RIP Medical Debt Work? RIP, working with third-party credit data providers, searches through large debt portfolios to locate accounts meeting their criteria for relief. RIP then negotiates to buy millions of dollars of this debt at a steep discount, usually a penny or less on the dollar.
