Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), is a lifelong brain-based disability with a range of physical, cognitive, and behavioral impacts.
Research has shown unequivocally that drinking during pregnancy can have serious effects on how the fetus develops, potentially damaging the brain, heart, sensory organs and more. The brain develops throughout the entire pregnancy, so drinking alcohol in any amount during any trimester can cause brain injury. These effects, known as FASD, last a lifetime, and there is no known cure. People with an FASD may be at higher risk for:
- needing lifelong assistance
- difficulty in school
- involvement in the justice system
- homelessness
- substance use
- inconsistent employment
- physical and mental health challenges
Despite our modest size, we are the largest US organization focused on FASD and prenatal alcohol exposure (PAS). The effectiveness of our work is documented and well known within our field. A recent comprehensive analysis of our programming showed that each dollar invested in our work yielded $55.70 of social return on that investment to our community.
We envision a world without PAE, where families impacted by FASD are seen and supported, and we are undaunted in our mission to help these individuals and their families thrive. We partner, collaborate and advocate for greater funding of services, further development of awareness, and a reduced incidence of FASD. We are proof that better is possible.
